The Reverend Philip Tom was the guest speaker for the Congregational
Strategies Committee final workshops on Saturday,
June 2, 2007.
The morning workshop focused on engaging with the community. Three words
to remember are: Listen, Listen, Listen. Tom urged pastors and members of
the participating congregations to give up preconceived notions about what
the community needs from the church. He described a simple five step
process to assist in the discerning God’s call to a local congregation. 
The afternoon workshop focused on funding for mission. Again, three words
were suggested: Ask, Ask, Ask. Tom gave participants a long list of
funding sources but insisted that it all comes down to having
relationships with the people we invite to participate. “People give to
people.”
Although the Congregational Strategies Committee is one of Presbytery’s
“sunset committees”, we anticipate that a Transformation Network will pick
up the banner and invite the presbytery to other similar workshops in the
future. |
