Oakland Presbyterian Church
(Springfield) hosted a first-ever "Poetry Slam" in October. Twenty-one
middle school students performed their own original poetry on stage,
having been coached for three weeks by three students from Wittenberg
University as a project for their American Poetry Class. Four North High
School student directors of this year's drama club also performed.
The poems were written in response to prompts such as: Freedom is…, The
real me is..., The world I dream…, This day...
Audience members snapped their fingers in appreciation as they heard the
students express their thoughts and feelings in words, in voice, and with
bodies.
