National Black Presbyterian Caucus
Midwest Regional Biennial Conference

October 13-14, 2006
Dayton, Ohio

People came from Missouri, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio to gather for a time of fellowship, worship, planning, and networking. Almost half of the participants were youth.

The Rev. Dr. Jerry Cannon

National Black Presbyterian Caucus (NBPC) President, The Rev. Dr. Jerry Cannon, brought news from the greater church, as well as challenging the group to be ready for change. Dr. Cannon reported that society changes about every five years, and the church changes about every 15 years. The resulting ten year gap is a real challenge for a church that distributes printed material in an MP3 world.

Cannon challenged those present to move beyond old ways of doing things, and come into the twenty-first century!

Miami Presbytery pastors, The Rev. Dr. Lutrelle Rainey of Trinity Presbyterian Church and The Rev. Robert E. Jones College Hill Presbyterian Church led the group in worship services.

Youth teams from five presbyteries participated in Youth Awareness Bowl Competition. Teams of three answered questions like: Who was the first Black Presbyterian to graduate from seminary? What are the four governing bodies of the church?  What does each governing body do?  Each group knew their subject matter. The Miami Presbytery team stayed in the competition to the very end and finished in a strong third place.
